CHAPTER 7

Time

Logan had killed a man. No, let me rephrase that. We had killed a man, because, yes, I blamed myself for my role in my mistakes. Staying put may have saved the poor man, at least that is my belief—one that has been haunting me for years.

The saltwater air slides through the windows. I breathe it in, trying my hardest to cleanse my mind of the painful memories. A warm breeze moves through my hair and, once I surface from the Hampton Roads Tunnel, my tension lets up. While I cross the bridge, obscurity falls around me, the moon’s glow reflects bright crests of waves in the bay and casts an otherworldly after glow in all directions.

I knew I wouldn’t be able to come back here without combing through the whole story again. Logan and I will have to relive it together, as well, if we are ever to have a hope of moving on.

I was torn when Jax disappeared from that horrifying scene. There was no way I could leave Logan to deal with the unfortunate soul at our feet, but Jax had been cursed to believe a Demon’s lies, and he needed a remedy. All I wanted was for him to get help, for his sake and for the sake of our love. We never thought that we wouldn’t be together forever. We’d loved each other since we were kids and nothing was going to keep us apart.

Logan moved quickly into problem-solving mode and called our aunt Aime as soon as we tore out of the storage area in his all-wheel drive Audi. I could hear Aime’s voice through the phone, and even though some of her tones went into some of the higher note ranges, she was calm and gave him specific instructions. We drove into the night, away from Blacksburg, Virginia Tech, and Jax. Aime promised to call in a Healer right away to help Jax, but not being with him felt wrong to me.

We met John, an Earthen Protector, in a desolate mountain area near Charlottesville. I was deeply disappointed that it wasn’t Alana, feeling that she was the only one who could help us out of this mess. She was familiar, yet John was quiet and efficient.

The body was removed from our world, instantly, but with an intense amount of effort from his Earthen magic. John wasn’t much older than us, late twenties. He had a rich, Nigerian accent, and his skin nearly disappeared into the night. He was accompanied by a Healer named Corinne, and the two were like night and day. Corinne glowed next to him with her pale, moonlight skin, fiery red hair, and large green eyes. Despite their differences they worked in unison, tandem beings complementing each other. I wondered if they were in love, devoted like Jax and I. The thought brought me to tears while her hands roved over me, seeping cold strands into my being that gave me surprising comfort and brought calm to my tremors. She eyed me compassionately before trying to speak.
